In this modern day and age, having educations is truly a life saver and it is very important. It opens opportunities for careers, and to make better money. It is also a way to get by in life and to learn how to be and do things independtly. Without acquiring the knowledge and education, people will end up struggling, and life experiences would be their only teacher. People will always struggle in life and have many downfalls, but many who chooses the right path will least be the unfortunate. The educated ones are in their own “paragraph”, a fence that keeps them in a group, like how Alexie would probably describe this.
Alexie grew up with books stashed all over his house. He learned how to read on his own just by looking at pictures on a Superman comic. The illustrations from the comic book helped him understand the plots of the story. His father loved books, so from then he had loved books also.
Indian children were expected to be “stupid” or fail, but Alexie was very different from his classmates because he was smart and knew how to read. It was dangerous to be smart because it was feared and ridiculed by both Indians and non-indians. Indians who failed were more likely to be accepted by other Indians.
Alexie visited schools as often as possible and taught the children creative writing. He became an influence on many Indian children he taught. They are now writing poems, short stories, and novels. They are saving their own lives. Alexie saved himself by being well educated and becoming a great writer. Growing up, he defended himself from being bullied by his other classmates. He wanted to achieve and be better than what was expected for young Indians.
All my life I have always been taught about the benefits of getting an education and where it can take me. I use to think that there is always a way for people to get by, even if they didn’t finish or go to school. For some it may be true, but many people aren’t so lucky.
I can almost relate to Alexie’s situation with his other Indian peers. As I was growing up, I have seen many young people of my ethincity who chose to be “street” smart rather than education smart. But in the end, they have ended up in the same place they started and no where to go because of the lack of knowledge and resource that could have been gained from simply just learning how to read and write. When your young, you don’t realize what is important nor understand what real responsibilties are and what is priority to upkeep the living responsibilty in a household. Many rely on their parents to pay bills and put food on the table and to only watch them struggle.
I believe knowledge is power, a ticket to a better life. It doesn’t take a genius to be a better person but only the time, energy, and motivation to thrive and succeed.
Hi Susie,
ReplyDeleteI think you are very correct in thinking education is extremely important. It will shape how you live your life, and not having an education could continue lifestyles of discrimination, closed minded-ness, and stereotyping. I will always regret never being interested in education when I was younger. Instead, I believed the only was to survive and live was to work for it, physically. My choices had led me to being a person with many small, insignificant jobs in my life, which gave me great insight to this world, but did nothing for securing my future. But, better late than never, I guess. I now have the opportunity to amend myself, so we'll see where that takes me.

Hi Susie,
ReplyDeleteI so agree with you in regards to education being a life saver. It open’s so many opportunities not just for the person getting his or her education but for his or her whole family. I know that In my family my daughter is the first one to go to college and it is a big deal in fact I am going back to school because I saw her do it, so I thought why couldn’t I. I am also hoping that since we started with her then maybe the next generation will not even give it a second thought and just go like it was the normal thing to do. I must admit that I think life experience is the perfect partner to getting an education, without life struggles we would not appreciate where we came from and where we are going.
It makes me so sad each and every time I read how Indian children were taught that they were not smart and if they showed any sign of it they would not be accepted. I love how Alexie showed them all the possibilities that was living inside each and every one of them and just waiting to come out. I can see the smiles on their face and the wonder in their eye, you mean me! Yes you! You are capable of writing poems, short stories and even a novel one day. By Alexie saving himself he has gone on to save many others, I would call him one smart Indian.
Yes education does open opportunities we have a rise in bachelor and master degrees because of education and it being more accessible. Children Alliance ensures that more children gain access to education as long as we keep educated to campaigne for this!!
ReplyDeletethank you for the reading

Hi Susie -
ReplyDeleteI too have witnessed students who want to fit in with a particular crowd where it is not "cool" to do well in school. In junior high I was one of those children. It was not popular to follow the directions of our instructors. We felt we were smarter than the adults. Thankfully the majority of us realized education was important for our future.
Thank you,
Sarah Baker
Hi Susie,
ReplyDeleteI truely believe that having an education is a life saver as well. Alexie was an amazing child. He had the opportunity to read because his dad loved reading. Because of that he was inspired by his father. Alexie read every second he could but he had books all around him. If he hadn't had that I don't know if he would have had such an influence to read. I really believe he is an amazing inspiration to all of us. I really enjoyed reading this story and hope you did too:-)It sounds like you were very inspired by this reading as well. You have a lot to relate to in this story. I enjoyed reading your dialogue.

Hi Susie,
ReplyDeleteI agree with you, education is so important! I too have seen many people chose not to get an education and to drop out of school. I see where they are now currently in their lives and to put it simiply they aren't happy people and they are barely getting by in life.
"I believe knowledge is power, a ticket to a better life. It doesn’t take a genius to be a better person but only the time, energy, and motivation to thrive and succeed." I loved the way that you put that and I can't think of another way to put it. It's so true. You don't need to be a genius, just try.
I feel education can take you anywhere you decide in life as long as you can set your mind to it you can excel in anything.
ReplyDeleteHello Susie,
ReplyDeleteI liked how you made a connection with this story. I too mad a small connection with this story. My mother had hundreds of books and always encouraged me to read but unlike Alexie I was resistant. I didn't want to listen I was a rebellious unruly child. I did share the love of comics though I had a huge collection of all kinds. I wish I had not cared about how I projected myself in high school but now there is only time to look forward and to forgive and forget. Thank you for your time Susie and keep up the good work.
